Simon Carr was born in New York City in 1953. He attended a variety of art schools and ended with an MFA at Parsons School of Design in 1981. Carr taught there and at different colleges, including BMCC until he began as a full-time faculty member at BMCC in 2003. Currently, Carr teaches Drawing and has focused on drawing the human figure, along with some comparison between human and animal anatomy. Carr’s artwork covers paintings, drawings and prints. Over the last few years, he has concentrated on street scenes in the city and country scenes upstate. His work is represented by the Bowery Gallery in New York.

“I‘ve been doing a lot of printmaking during lockdown. The process is very absorbing and actually creates images no other medium could produce. These are all scenes from upstate New York of fields, barns, horses, and people from that area. My biography is not very interesting, but I hope these images are! The etching are all combinations of hardground etching, softground etching, aquatint, drypoint, and emery cloth.

Teaching at BMCC lets me talk to intelligent young artists about things that have concerned and fascinated me over the years. I hope it’s useful to them in their future careers.”
