BMCC Professors Present Findings from Battery Park Study at BPCA Meeting
Criminal Justice Professor Michelle Ronda and Sociology Professor Robin Isserles presented findings from Battery Park City Authority Parks User Count and Study at a Battery Park community meeting October 2. Several BMCC students worked with BMCC researchers Ronda and Isserles, conducting field work to compile and complete the study which took place from July 2017 until June 2018. Based on the BMCC-led research along with data gathered by BPCA, the study found that around 690,000 people—both residents and non-residents—make use of the 36 acres of parks in Battery Park City each year. "The students who worked on this project spoke so highly of the experience. Several remarked to us that it was 'life changing'. Not only did they gain experience in conducting research, and learn a new skill set —interviewing people, entering data in social science software, offering feedback on methodology— so many of them shared how much it helped them to gain confidence in speaking up, whether in their classes, their workplaces, even asking for directions,” said Isserles.
