BMCC Community Pays It Forward by Donating Blood  
In Summer 2018, the New York Blood Center announced that the city had reached only half its target supply of blood. To help offset that shortage, BMCC students, faculty and staff took part in a campus blood drive. ​     ​​

New York State Assemblymember Meets with Adult Students at Hamilton-Madison House 
New York State Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou (District 65) met with adult learners from the Bridges Literacy Zone program, a partnership between the BMCC Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development and the Hamilton-Madison House on September 18. The program, which provides English language classes, health, family and financial literacy workshops, and more, receives government support from the New York State Education Department and through the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program. September UPSHOT: Habits of Successful Students include Visits to the LRC In courses with high fail rates, students who used the BMCC Learning Resource Center’s (LRC) tutoring services had significantly higher pass rates than those who did not according to the September 2018 UPSHOT report from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics. In fall 2017, 13,693 individual students engaged with the Learning Resource Center or a tutoring lab, most visiting just once. Taking advantage of the tutoring services and instructional labs is part of being successful at BMCC. Forty six percent of students with GPAs above 3.0 used the LRC, while among students with GPAs of 1.0 or below, only 22 percent used these tutoring resources. "The LRC provides academic support services to meet student learning needs and strengthen their academic skills,” said Gregory Farrell, director, LRC.  The full report with detailed charts can be found at the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics.

BMCC Alumnus Leads Talk on Race and Gender in Military
Victor Ray, a BMCC alumnus and professor of sociology at the University of Tennessee led a talk, “Collateral Damage: Race, Gender and the Post-Combat Tradition” on September 17 in Richard Harris Terrace. Ray discussed his two main claims—military context influences the expression of race and gender discrimination, and policies aimed at eliminating discrimination can hurt those who come forward with complaints. The event was sponsored by the CUNY Justice Academy and organized by BMCC Criminal Justice Professor Shirley Leyro. Ray, who attended BMCC from 2002 until 2004, was a liberal arts major and a BMCC/ Vassar College Exploring Transfer scholar. After graduating from Vassar, he earned a Ph.D. from Duke University. “BMCC helped to set me up for the work I’m doing now. Both the classes I took and the activism I was a part of while I was a member of the BMCC student government all helped put me on a path to getting my Ph.D. and becoming a professor,” said Ray.

Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) National Test, Oct. 3
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system on October 3, 2018. The test will assess the readiness to distribute an emergency message nationwide and determine whether improvements are needed. The test messages will be sent using FEMA's IPAWS, which enables authorities to send emergency messages to multiple communications networks, including the EAS and WEA as part of the nation's modern alert and warning infrastructure. The WEA test message will begin at 2:18 p.m. (EDT). The EAS message will be sent at 2:20 p.m. (EDP). This is the first nationwide Presidential-level WEA test and cannot be opted out. Learn more.

Starfish Early Alert System Expands
The Office of Academic Affairs has announced the expansion of Starfish, an Early Alert system that will connect faculty, academic advisors, and staff with students in ASAP, the BMCC Learning Academy, MECA and online courses. Office of Public Safety Offers Resources and Services The Office of Public Safety ensures a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment at BMCC through resources including free C.P.R., A.E.D. and First Aid, and Campus-Community Emergency Response Training for faculty, staff and students. Public Safety also trains staff as campus fire wardens. Bathroom Renovations in 199 Chambers Street Building BMCC has begun its next phase of its restroom renovation capital project in the 199 Chambers Street building. This project focuses on providing greater accessibility and includes upgrades to the restroom fixtures, stalls, floors, energy-saving LED ceiling lights, ventilation system and temperature controls.
