Natasha Lifton, Senior Program Officer at New York Community Trust Visits BMCC
Natasha Lifton, Senior Program Officer at the New York Community Trust visited BMCC to attend a presentation on the BMCC Learning Academy in the Fiterman Conference Center on Wednesday, March 2. Ms. Lifton spoke with students, counselors and staff about their experience in the Learning Academy, and Alex Pyak, Learning Academy Director, presented an overview of the program. “From the point of admission to graduation, part of the program’s purpose is to create sustainable relationships between faculty, counselors and students,” said Pyak. BMCC President Antonio Pérez spoke to the group, noting that, “It is important to create successful models such as the Learning Academy, as we are always looking for vehicles to assist our students as they move through this large institution. The data show that student success is related to their relationships with faculty, and that is one important component this program provides.” Vice President of College Development Doris Holz was also in attendance, and Senior Vice President and Provost Karrin Wilks commented that, “Cohort programs like the BMCC Learning Academy work because of the high-impact power of small cohort, faculty and counselor engagement.” Since its inception in 2012, The BMCC Learning Academy, which is funded in part by The New York Community Trust, has served over 1,700 students.
