Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

The Division of Student Affairs provides opportunities for students to develop meaningful partnerships with on-campus departments as well as local non-profit organizations, public schools, city government, and civic organizations through a wide variety of volunteer experiences.

Students may participate in one-time or ongoing volunteer activities that will enrich student learning outside of the classroom. Volunteering allows students to develop new interests, skills, and abilities while creating change on the campus and community level.
In addition, BMCC volunteers develop as leaders who gain networking opportunities and professional contacts, build their résumé and co-curricular transcript, and have access to valuable career-building prospects.

For more information on off-campus volunteer events or to find out about Alternative Spring Break, please contact us at cct@bmcc.cuny.edu.

The American Museum of Natural History utilizes more than one thousand volunteers. The volunteer program is administered by the Department of Volunteer Services.

More than 50% of the volunteers work directly with the public. They staff the information desks, teach school children, conduct tours of the Museum, and act as explainers in the fossil halls and in the earth and space exhibit area. The volunteers behind the scenes provide a wide range of essential services. They assist in the production of the Natural History magazine, provide special clerical and computer support services, work with the collections of the science departments, catalog and handle new and rare books in the library, and accept a myriad of other assignments in both the administrative and science departments of the Museum.

Mentoring USA is a non-profit organization that aims to forge powerful, transformative connections for young people through the advocacy and involvement of mentors. Using a one-to-one site-based model, our trained mentors inspire by example and model positive life choices.  Please visit our website, www.mentoringusa.org to find out more about our organization and how to get involved.

If you are interested in mentoring, please Apply Here  Once you fill out an online application, you will be prompted to RSVP for training.  The Volunteer Coordinator, will be in contact with you.

Frequently Asked Questions:

*What is a site-based program?
All of our programs take place at the facility where our partnerships exist, under the supervision of a Site Supervisor. We form partnerships with foster care agencies, public housing facilities, public schools and community centers and recruit our Mentees from these sources.

What are the benefits of mentoring?
Our mentors are able to network within a community of dedicated volunteers.  In our one-to-one site-based mentoring model, mentors will be interacting with groups of other participants and have the opportunity to develop friendships.  Mentoring also builds upon youth development skills for those looking to gain experience with youth.  Most importantly, you’ll be positively changing a child’s life.

*As a mentor, what will a mentoring session with my mentee consist of?
How your time is spent with a Mentee depends on the Mentee’s needs. We provide structured activities within our Activity Guide that implements educational elements. However, the time spent with your Mentee can be used to do homework, talk about their day, or even collaborate on an art project.

*How long is the commitment and How often do you meet?
Our programs require the commitment of one academic year (September to June). Programs usually kick off at the end of September/early October.  Four to six hours per month are required. Depending on the site selected, a mentor will either meet their mentee for 1 hour every week or 2 hours every other week.

*How do I become a mentor?
First, fill out an application and then RSVP to attend a mentor training. At the training, you will be introduced to the responsibilities of a mentor, benefits to mentoring, best practices in mentoring, and what to expect from your volunteer experience with MUSA

“JASA” mission is to sustain and enrich the lives of the aging in the New York Metropolitan area so they can remain in the community with dignity and autonomy.

You can give back to the community by donating your time, experience, and enthusiasm as a JASA volunteer. Become a member of the JASA team! You can volunteer to visit or telephone a homebound senior; accompany a senior to the physician; help care for pets; or lead a discussion group. Time commitment varies. Volunteers are asked to complete an application and be interviewed. Match your interests to seniors’ interests and you will both gain from the partnership.

JASA offers these and other volunteer opportunities: friendly visiting, pet care, teleconnect, escort service and group service projects.
