Admission to Registered Nursing Program (RN)

Prospective nursing students must be admitted to BMCC as well as to the Nursing program. The department has a limit on the number of matriculants allowed in the Nursing program each year.

Please be advised that the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Nursing Program receives far more applications than there are available seats. Consequently, not all eligible students are admitted to the program.

The college does not guarantee entry into the nursing program. Some students have found it necessary to apply two or three times before being admitted to the nursing program.

The BMCC Testing Office offers free prep classes to help students prepare for the CUNY tests in reading and writing and mathematics.

  • Meet all general admissions requirements to BMCC. Visit our Frequently Asked Questions for more details on applying to BMCC for Nursing.
  • Complete the five required prerequisite courses for Day Program (ENG 101, PSY 100, MAT 104, *CHE 121, and BIO 425) or seven required prerequisite courses for Evening/Weekend Program (includes the first five prerequisite courses plus BIO 426 and BIO 420) with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5; the lowest acceptable grade in any one of the required prerequisite courses is “C”. The department has a limit on the number of matriculants allowed into the Nursing Program. While a GPA of 2.5 in the required prerequisite courses and an overall GPA of 2.5 are the minimum requirements for consideration of an application, these do not guarantee admission into the Nursing Program.
  • The Department accepts CUNY’s policy in reference to the “F” and “C-” grade (policy adopted 9/1/90) for non-nursing courses. Effective Fall 2024, the “F” and “C-” policy does not apply to Nursing courses and MAT
    104. Source: CUNY “F” grade policy (revised 9/1/94).  First-time freshmen and first-time transfer starting at BMCC have the option to repeat one or more of the required Nursing prerequisite courses (ENG 101, PSY 100, CHE 121, and BIO 425) as outlined below:

    • Students will have the opportunity to repeat these courses only once to be considered for admission into the BMCC Nursing program.
    • The repeated course grade will be averaged with the previous course grade to be calculated towards the PCI GPA.

Note:
Nursing will consider the repeated grade for the purpose of acceptance into the program even though the repeated course and grade may be excluded from student’s cumulative GPA and credits earned. The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and Part-Time Tuition Assistance Program (PTAP) may not cover a repeated required prerequisite course.

As of Fall 2019, students interested in entering the BMCC Nursing Program must take the HESI A2 Nursing Admission Test at the College. HESI A2 Nursing Admission Test scores from other nursing schools will not be accepted. This examination may be taken for a maximum of two times but NOT in the same semester. To reserve a seat for the HESI A2 Nursing Admission Test, eligible BMCC students MUST:

  1. Complete the Nursing Program Admission Checklist (NPAC) to determine eligibility to take the HESI A2 Nursing Admission Test and submit to the Nursing Academic Advisor in the Spring and the Fall semester.
  2. It is highly recommended that Day Program applicants complete BIO 426 prior to taking the HESI A2 Nursing Admission Test. Evening/Weekend Program applicants must complete (in addition to the five required prerequisite courses) BIO 426 and BIO 420 prior to taking the HESI A2 Nursing Admission Test.
  3. Once eligibility is determined, the Nursing Academic Advisor will provide the student with the Nursing Program Admission Application and instructions to pay the fee to take the HESI A2 Nursing Admission Test.
