Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year institutions, held its annual BMCC induction ceremony yesterday. More than two hundred student-inductees from fall 2006 and spring 2007 took part in the program.We caught up with Jillian Gritz, Shu Zheng, and Yonnicka Williams, three new inductees, who spoke about being members of the prestigious academic honor society.
Phi Theta Kappa’s (PTK) mission is two-fold: 1) recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and (2) provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
Membership is by invitation after a student achieves a 3.5 grade point average on completing 12 credits at BMCC. The society is recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society of two-year colleges.
Jillian Gritz, a Liberal Arts major who will be the new Vice President of Service, spoke about how she has been involved in bringing guest speakers to campus from local government to Citibank to discuss the dynamics of power and how it is distributed throughout society. “PDK is a great way to learn about how the world works.”
Shu Zheng, an Accounting major and the new Vice President of Finance, is happy to be part of PTK because “It develops leadership skills and presents us with opportunities for service.” One example, according to Zheng is PTK’s program, “Books for Africa. “ Members,” Zheng says, “collect books from schools and send them to Africa.” She also spoke of her recent trip to Nashville, Tennessee, where she was part of an international convention. “I was one of 3,800 young people who exchanged experiences and planned leadership programs.”
Yonnicka Williams, a Respiratory Therapy major and the new Vice President for Scholarships, is honored to be part of PTK. She says, “It’s my home away from home. It’s helping me grow as a person and giving me the social skills to make my way through the world. I want other students to join PTK.”
At the ceremony, Precious Sellars-Mulhern, Associate Professor/Counseling Department and Phi Theta Kappa/Alpha Kappa Chapter Faculty Contact Advisor at BMCC, welcomed the inductees by saying, “Our hearts are filled with love tonight because we know the effort and commitment required to become eligible for membership in Alpha Kappa Chapter/Phi Theta Kappa. We applaud you for setting high goals, staying the course, and achieving academic success.”
President Antonio Pérez, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Sadie Bragg, and Vice President for Student Affairs, Michael Haynes, were present for induction ceremony.
