The Art Foundations program in the Music and Art Department at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) and the Shirley Fiterman Art Center (SFAC) located at 81 Barclay Street in  BMCC’s Fiterman Hall, are excited to present an exhibition of work by student artists in a wide range of mediums. The exhibition will run April 25 through May 13.

The curating of the show began as Studio Art professors selected student work developed in the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters. Six discipline heads then reviewed the artwork generated in a variety of classes — Color and Design, Digital Design, Drawing, Painting, Photography and Sculpture. A new medium that falls under the category of Sculpture is 3D Design, a required part of the curriculum for Studio Art majors.

“I’d like to say there are no small shows, only small artists,” said one of these Studio Art majors, Willie Jimenez. “I think especially starting out, one should take advantage of as many experiences showing off their work and going to openings as possible. Plus, one never knows where an opportunity will come from.”

While the talented students whose work is included in the exhibition do include some Multimedia Arts and other Liberal Arts majors, the majority are Studio Art majors.

BMCC’s Art Foundations majors are prepared for baccalaureate studies and a career in the arts. They can earn either an Associate of Art (A.A.) in Art History, or an Associate of Science (A.S.) in Studio Art. Mentored by BMCC art faculty, students build portfolios for successful transfer to top art and design schools.

“Our Studio Art faculty are so happy to return to an in-person exhibition for the annual Student Show! The artwork is terrific, and that talent and hard work is best appreciated in the professional setting of the Shirley Fiterman Art Center. After a year-and-a-half of remote art classes on Zoom, it’s been wonderful to work with our students in person again,” said Professor of Art and sculptor Sarah Haviland.
