Statement from the President of Borough of Manhattan Community College

September 19, 2007

To the BMCC Community

Borough of Manhattan Community College of The City University of New York is one of the most diverse urban community colleges in the nation. Our foremost concern is the education, safety and welfare of our diverse student body and community.

Last week there were two off-campus altercations on the same day involving BMCC students, and perhaps others, that led to the arrest of several individuals. Though we believe these to be isolated incidents, we take them very seriously.

We are cooperating with the criminal investigation. We are also conducting our own internal investigation and review. Students who have violated our standards of conduct will be disciplined in accordance with the University’s student disciplinary process.

It has been reported that these altercations were bias related. Such conduct would be deplorable and in violation of the spirit of diversity that we at BMCC promote and treasure. I want our community to know that we will continue to strive to be a paradigm of a multicultural society that celebrates and embraces our differences. We will not tolerate violations of these important principles.

President Antonio Pérez
