Social Justice Week Inspires Change Through a Lens of Inclusivity

BMCC's first Social Justice Week is April 4 through April 12.

March 31, 2022

The Race, Equity, and Inclusion Steering Committee (REI) at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) is excited to present the College’s inaugural Social Justice Week, Monday, April 4 through Tuesday, April 12.

The theme of Social Justice Week, “Your Voice. Our Action. A Better BMCC,” is reflected in the wide range of events, panels and presentations, both in-person and remote, being offered to the BMCC community.

The purpose of the activities, according to a Call for Submissions that was issued by the committee, is to create honest and open dialogue on equity, inclusion and social justice issues.

The REI steering committee includes College Discovery Director Pedro Pérez, Criminal Justice Professor Shenique S. Davis and Chief Diversity Officer/Special Advisor to the President Odelia Levy.

A joint statement from the co-chairs states that, “We are thrilled to organize BMCC’s first Social Justice Week. With the theme of, Your Voice. Our Action. A Better BMCC., we hope Social Justice Week fosters moments of connection across the college community and inspires students, staff, and faculty to ‘own’ their voices, stand in their truth, tell their stories and live authentically. This week is about celebrating, embracing and affirming our differences. The events represent a sampling of the work being led by members of our community. Yet, we are reminded that the true value of social justice is not in the week’s programming but in our everyday actions.”
