United States Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D, NY) will deliver the commencement address at Borough of Manhattan Community College’s (BMCC) graduation ceremony on May 31. BMCC’s commencement will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Theater at Madison Square Garden. Almost 2,000 students will graduate this year.

“It is particularly appropriate that Senator Clinton should deliver the commencement address this year,” noted BMCC President Antonio Pérez. “Her leadership and strong advocacy on behalf of New Yorkers have yielded real fruits in terms of federal funding and tax incentives that we so desperately need to rebuild downtown and the lives of people who live, work, and study here.” Pérez will present Clinton with the presidential medal, the college’s highest honor.

Located in Lower Manhattan, a few blocks from Ground Zero, BMCC’s main campus served as an emergency command center for the city of New York. BMCC was was directly affected by the terrorist attack of September 11. Six BMCC students were lost in the attack. Classes were cancelled for three weeks, and one of the college’s buildings was severely damaged and has remained closed.
