Professor Teixeira Appointed to Prestigious Committee of the American Mathematics Association

June 5, 2007

Professor Klement Teixeira has been appointed chair of the Mathematics Intensive / College Mathematics Committee by the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC).

Professor Teixeira is currently a deputy chair of the mathematics department at BMCC and has served on several college and departmental committees. Before coming to BMCC, Teixeira taught a variety of mathematics courses at New York University and City College (CUNY). His research interests include mathematics, probability and statistics, quantitative reasoning, and mathematics education. “I am honored to be appointed to this position and I will be depending upon a lot of talented people to get the job done.”

The Mathematics Intensive/ College Mathematics Committee will address issues related to statistics. AMATYC currently has a joint committee with the American Statistics Association, but the formal “joint” committee is being disbanded, in favor of merging the objectives of the joint committee into this new committee.

Teixeira was part of the AMATYC writing team that recently published “Beyond Crossroads, Implementing Mathematics Standards in the First Two Years of College.” This publication communicates standards and principles for the teaching and learning of mathematics in two-year institutions. He has published and presented on the subject of Quantitative Reasoning.

As part of the University’s Coordinated Undergraduate Education Project, Professor Teixeira collaborated with the office of academic affairs and colleagues to implement a program called “Mathematics across the Curriculum” (MAC). The objective of this program is to have faculty integrate quantitative reasoning skills in their various disciplines.

Professor Teixeira also collaborated with his colleagues in the mathematics department to create a quantitative reasoning course for students. The objective of this course is to show how mathematics is applied in everyday life.

The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges was founded in 1974. It is the only organization exclusively devoted to providing a national forum for the improvement of mathematics instruction in the first two years of college. AMATYC has approximately 2,500 individual members and more than 100 institutional members in the United States and Canada. Educators in 47 states and one Canadian province are represented through AMATYC’s 44 affiliate organizations.

AMATYC provides professional development opportunities for educators interested in the first two years of collegiate mathematics instruction through an annual conference, summer institutes, traveling workshops, publications and projects.
