The Department of Nursing at Borough of Manhattan Community College, The City University of New York (BMCC/CUNY) held a Pinning Ceremony to honor 88 Nursing graduates, the class of Spring 2023, on June 2 in Theatre One at BMCC’s 199 Chambers Street campus. The Pinning Ceremony opened with a moving slide presentation of the Class of January 2023, showing students in the BMCC labs and classrooms as they learned the knowledge and skills vital to an RN.

In the weeks to come, the most recent BMCC Nursing graduates will take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (RNs). BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe spoke of the compassion and hard work of nurses who learned both practice and theory in areas including pediatric care, psychiatric nursing and more.

“Our nursing graduates are the light that gives patients hope in their darkest moments,” the President said. “A nurse is an essential patient advocate, and compassionate listener. You, our nursing graduates, will deliver up-to-date care that protects the humanity of those at their most vulnerable.”

The event’s keynote speaker was Shelline Kerr RN, MSN, introduced by Nursing major Lawrence Shulman, president of the BMCC Nursing Club.

Kerr is a graduate of the BMCC Nursing program, and went on to earn a Master’s in Nursing at Lehman College, CUNY. She serves as a family nurse practitioner at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn.

Graduates of the BMCC Nursing program who shared their reflections of their experience at the college included Nadine Ali, Emma Griswold Stevens and Holden Silverman.

Professors Anne Bové and Nursing Chair Judy Eng introduced the graduates, and professors Marcel Edinboro and Monique Cayo led the pinning of the graduates.

Closing remarks were delivered by Professor Janice Summers, and closing remarks were made by Nursing Chair Judy Eng.
