PEARSON EDUCATION GIVES BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE $200,000 FOR HEALTH SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIPS

Pearson Education, a leading education company, will give Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) a major gift of $200,000 for scholarships. The first round of scholarships will be awarded in April 2002.

Pearson Education created the scholarship fund in response to the tragic events of September 11. The company made the gift in memory of six BMCC students who were killed in the World Trade Center disaster. In honor of the medical rescue workers at Ground Zero, the scholarships will be designated for students studying health sciences.

To be eligible for the distinguished award, students must be enrolled in a degree program in nursing, respiratory therapy, health information technology, or paramedics. A BMCC scholarship committee will select students for the awards based on their academic achievement and an essay describing why they want to pursue a career in the health sciences.

“Pearson’s generous gift to BMCC will allow up to 30 students to study tuition free for up to three semesters,” explained BMCC President Antonio Pérez. “These scholarships will benefit not only our students, but the people of New York City who rely on the nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and health information technicians who graduate from our college,” Pérez noted.

“The tragic events of September 11 placed a renewed focus on the importance of educating our future emergency medical professionals and supporting their work, said Robin Baliszewski, president of the Career, Education, and Technology Division of Prentice Hall, a Pearson brand. “We are committed to educating these individuals who are so vital to our national safety. Through this scholarship program, we can honor the BMCC students who lost their lives as well as pay tribute to the brave emergency medical workers who help to keep our city safe.”
