PARENTS GIVE BMCC EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER HIGH MARKS

April 14, 2003

In a recent survey, student parents with children enrolled in BMCC Early Childhood Center gave its teaching staff a score of excellent. They gave the center an overall score that was just past the mid-point between very good and excellent.

The survey was conducted in the fall 2002 semester. Parents were asked to rank the center in seven areas: classroom program; teaching staff; administration; administrative staff; food, health and safety; space, equipment, and physical environment; and overall satisfaction. In each of the seven areas, parents ranked the Early Childhood Center as very good to excellent.

“We were very pleased that 23.6 percent of student parents took the time to participate in the survey,” said Todd Boressoff, director of the BMCC Early Childhood Center. “This is a very good response rate to any survey,” he explained.

In addition to the high ratings, many parents took time to write their own comments. One evening student wrote, “The evening teachers are friendly and they take care of my child like he is their own. They dry his tears when I bring him in crying because he sees that snack machine outside and I say, ‘no junk food.’ They help him with his homework and apply bandages when necessary.”

A day student parent said, “My education at BMCC would not be possible, if not for the Early Childhood Center. I can concentrate on my studies knowing that my child is in a safe, affordable environment while I am in class.” Another student parent said, “The teachers… show a genuine concern for the children’s well being. They keep me well informed of my child’s progress.”

The Early Childhood Center offers day, evening and Saturday sessions for student parents and their children ages of 2.9 to 6. It is licensed by the New York City Department of Health.
