The current threat surrounding the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has created uncertainty for DREAMers at BMCC and colleges across the United States.
We stand firmly in support of all students and reinforce our commitment to provide the opportunity for all our students to pursue their learning and life goals.
Since the advent of the DACA program in 2012, we have witnessed the benefits of this program for our students and the positive impact it has made on our college community.
BMCC’s DACA students are young adults who have met our admission requirements and earned a seat in the classroom to receive a quality education. Many of them have been exemplary student scholars and student leaders, who dedicate their time on campus and in their communities. Through DACA, our students and alumni have been able to flourish in industries that include science, business, education and the arts.
BMCC is a vibrant learning community. We celebrate our diversity and the vital role that BMCC plays in expanding educational opportunity, particularly for immigrants and underrepresented populations.
Since 1963, BMCC has evolved to accommodate changes in the city of New York, the national economy and changing student needs—in particular the needs of our DACA students who are facing the threat of deportation. Today, we demonstrate our resiliency to ensure that every student is provided with the support to achieve his or her goals.
The Office of Student Affairs, located in Room S-350, is available to assist with questions and direct students for help through the BMCC Counseling Center, located at 199 Chambers Street, in Room S-343.
Also, BMCC’s Single Stop is scheduling immigration forums as an opportunity for students to meet with immigration attorneys to discuss new developments pertaining to DACA. Any student who has concerns, should visit the Immigration Support for Students website to obtain updates about events and resources. Students are also encouraged to contact the Single Stop Office by calling (212) 208-8195 or visiting their office in Room S-230.
BMCC will continue to be part of the dialogue surrounding DACA and advocate for a permanent solution that enables all students to thrive and contribute to our local and national communities. I have confidence in the strength of our community as we move forward through this challenging time.
