On Wednesday, May 2, the University Office of Student Affairs presented the Fourteenth Annual Student Leadership Awards. Martha Santos and Michael Brown were BMCC recipients who demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities in both academic and co-curricular activities.
Martha Santos
Martha Santos is a Brooklyn resident and an Early Childhood Education major. She is active in student organizations such as the Latino Honor Society, Cultura Latinoamericana and Acentos Latinos Alliance, of which she is president and Editor–in-Chief Acentos Latinos Magazine. She has also served as a Peer Mentor, a Student Ambassador, a member of the Student Election Review Committee, and a tutor for Jumpstart, an early education not-for-profit organization that services children who come from low–income families.
Martha also became part of the first cohort of Kaplan Educational Scholars and an Annette Rickel Foundation Scholar.
“I am certain that my participation in these student leadership activities contributed to being admitted to Mount Holyoke College next fall,” says Santos.
Michael Brown
Michael Brown enrolled at BMCC in spring 2006 and immediately excelled in his academic studies. After his first semester he realized that his talents could be used to serve the BMCC community and chose to make “growth” of the college part of co-curricular focus. His work at the college newspaper and his peer mentoring provide him with a platform to express his voice and foster change. In both venues, he plays an important role as fundraiser and program analyst. Moreover, Michael also participates in the Goldman Sachs Leadership Program, the Chess Club, and the Phi Theta Honor Society.
Michael says, “My greatest challenge is dealing with different personalities that I encounter daily; my motivation is the satisfaction I feel when I help someone realize his or her growth potential.”
