Good Sports: BMCC’s 2009-2010 Sports Round-Up

May 20, 2010

The CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) recently hosted the annual Michael Steuerman Scholar – Athlete Awards presentation at Baruch College, where students, athletes and family members showcased their showmanship by supporting athletes from all 15 CUNY colleges.

The main attraction of the night, and the most prestigious award, was the Michael Steuerman Scholar Athlete Award, which went to four athletes: Justin Wong of Baruch, Evgeniya Kim of Hunter College, Aleksandr Kopach of Kingsborough Community College and BMCC swimmer Stacey Geoghegan, a Dean’s list student who has a 3.75 GPA.

Mom, student, swimmer, award-winner

Not only did Geoghegan face the demanding task of being a student/athlete  at BMCC and swimming for  coach Andy Escobar, who operates a rigorous swim program, but she is also a married mother of four children.

When Geoghegan first approached Coach Escobar about joining the swim team, he gave her an opportunity, but assumed she would not be able to juggle all of her responsibilities and would quit within the first two weeks.

But Geoghegan ended up making a splash, and now, two years later, she’s team Captain.  During her tenure at BMCC, she has won both gold and silver medals in the 50, 100, and 200 Freestyle events, including the gold medal in the 50 and 100 Free at the 2009 CUNY championships and the silver in the 2010 CUNY championships.

Geoghegan also was a top finisher in the 2009 and 2010 NJCAA Eastern Regionals and National Championships.

A Mention for Modou

Panther Modou Seck was named 2010 CUNYAC Scholar/Athlete Honorable Mention. Seck is Co-Captain of the BMCC men’s soccer team and was named to the All-Region First Team as the Panthers advanced to the CUNYAC Championship game.
Seck is also a Dean’s list student, with a 3.76 GPA. He has received multiple scholarship offers to finish his soccer career at a four-year college.

Hoop Dreams

And on the court, basketball players Eyandra Molina and Tony Vails were named All-American winners.

Representing the Lady Panthers basketball team, Molina was named CUNYAC player of the year, and was named to the NJCAA All-American 3rd team

Tony Vails, who represents the Panther Basketball team, was also named CUNYAC player of the year and named to the NJCAA All-American 3rd team.

And finally, for the ninth time in the past thirteen years, BMCC won the CUNYAC Commissioner’s Cup, which signifies the most outstanding athletic program in the Community College Conference.
The Panthers, winners of the first five CUNY Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cups and seven overall in the 13 years since the inception of the award, won the title of the strongest overall Athletic Program (scoring 54 points) by a mere three points.

Be part of a team

The BMCC Office of Athletics provides an opportunity for students to participate in intercollegiate sport activities and recreation.

BMCC’s intercollegiate teams include men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball and baseball.

The athletics facility is available for current BMCC students, faculty, and staff. BMCC alumni can use the facility with their BMCC Alumni Card.
