Faculty Gather to Share Insight Into Academic Assessment

December 14, 2016

The BMCC Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics presented Academic Assessment Day on Tuesday, December 13 in the Fiterman Conference Center. Hosts included Karrin E. Wilks, Provost and Senior Vice President; Christopher Shults, Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning and Marjorie Dorimé-Williams, Director of Assessment.

Faculty from departments including Modern Languages, Allied Health, Speech, Communications and Theatre, Music and Art, Accounting, Media Arts and Technology, Health Education, Business, Mathematics, English and Computer Information Systems (CIS) attended the day-long event, sharing their experiences with departmental and other assessment efforts.

Provost Wilks welcomed the audience and Director Dorimé-Williams put the day in context with introductory remarks on the primary goal of assessment: “to change the learning environment so that student performance is improved.” She also stressed that “one size does not fit all” — that the effectiveness of any assessment strategy depends on its relationship to curriculum, instruction and operational functions.

Faculty presenters included Rebecca Garte (Teacher Education); Howard Meltzer (Music and Art), Sidney Askew (Accounting), Mahatapa Palit (Business Management) and Anna Salvati (CIS).

Other presenters included Bailey Watson, a consultant with Nuventive PlanningPoint, which provides the assessment software, TracDat.

Discussions throughout the day focused on how departments across the college have developed and implemented assessment tools, and used them to improve student outcomes. Other topics of discussion included BMCC’s Academic Program Review (APR) process and the meaningful assessment of student learning.
