Decontamination Plan for Fiterman Hall Approved

“We are pleased that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the decontamination plan for Fiterman Hall of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) in downtown Manhattan.

“This will enable this important project to move forward. I would like to thank all the federal, state and city officials who have been working with the EPA and, especially, New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Speaker Silver played a critical role in opening a dialogue between downtown residents, community leaders and all parties involved in the deconstruction and remediation process. We look forward to continuing this ongoing dialogue.

“Our goal continues to be to take the damaged building down safely and to replace it with a new facility. This will meet both the educational needs of BMCC’s student body — currently 20,000 students — and the community of lower Manhattan, which is looking for continued progress in the post-9/11 rebuilding of their community.”
