CUNY Establishes Committee for BMCC Presidential Search

January 14, 2020

NOTE: In a statement issued on January 13, 2020, by CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodriguez, Ph.D., the City University of New York has announced the establishment of the search committee for the next President of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC).

A national search for the next President of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) has begun. A search committee has been established in accordance with the CUNY Board of Trustees Presidential Search Guidelines. We want to thank the members of the committee who have agreed to take on this important role:

Honorable Barry F. Schwartz, Vice Chair, CUNY Board of Trustees – Committee Chair
Honorable Fernando Ferrer, Trustee
Honorable Lorraine A. Cortés-Vázquez, Trustee
Professor Everett W. Flannery, Allied Health Science/ BMCC
Professor Hollis Glaser, Speech, Communications and Theatre/ BMCC
Associate Professor Lesley L. Rennis, Health Education/ BMCC
Ms. Cheng Chen, Vice President, Student Government Association, Student Representative
Mr. Gilles Seulio, Secretary, Student Government Association, Student Representative
Ms. Mary Lu Bilek, Dean, CUNY School of Law
Ms. Andrea Shapiro Davis, Interim Vice Chancellor for University Advancement/ CUNY
Mr. Philip Berry, Philip Berry Associates, LLC, Alumni Representative
Ms. Beth Lief, External Constituent Representative/ Former President, Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation

The committee will be assisted by Dr. Narcisa Polonio from the search firm Greenwood/Asher and Associates. She can be reached at 202-276-1983/ and welcomes your confidential nominations and input. Ms. Mahlet Tsegaye, Director of Executive Search/CUNY, will help facilitate the search. Mr. Douglas Israel, Director of Government & Community Relations will serve as the BMCC search liaison.

As a first step, we want to provide an opportunity to the entire BMCC community to provide input. Therefore we are asking the community to complete this survey. Feedback from this survey will be used in the development of the position profile. An announcement preceding the full advertisement has been placed in various media outlets.

On January 28th, the Trustee members of the committee, Dr. Polonio and members of my staff will be visiting the campus and meeting with various constituent groups. There will also be an open forum. Mr. Israel will provide the logistical details for that day when they are finalized.

Once your input has been received and the advertisement and position profile have been distributed, the search committee, with the guidance of the search firm, will enter into a “quiet” phase of the search, and spend the better part of the spring semester reviewing credentials and interviewing candidates. In order to generate a strong and deep applicant pool, committee members will be asked to pledge total confidentiality.

We have every confidence that a diverse slate of many strong candidates will be interested in this position. BMCC is a comprehensive and vibrant institution of higher education with the highest undergraduate enrollment of any college in New York City. The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked BMCC third nation-wide among community colleges with the greatest success in lifting low-income students into the middle class. US News and World Report ranked BMCC fifth among associate-degree producing institutions nationwide for awarding degrees to All Minority Students, third for African American students and 11th for both Hispanic and Asian American students.

The college is at an exciting juncture. We look forward to recruiting a leader who will continue to move Borough of Manhattan Community College to even greater success.
