BMCC Welcomes Pete Gutierrez, M.D., Inaugural Acting Dean of Health Sciences and Nursing

The Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) is pleased to welcome Dr. Pete Gutierrez, M.D. as Inaugural Acting Dean of Health Sciences and Nursing, effective March 15. Dr. Gutierrez, who will serve on the President’s cabinet, will report directly to Senior Vice President and Provost Erwin Wong and President Anthony E. Munroe.

Peter GutierrezIn his new position, Dr. Gutierrez  will serve as chief administrative officer of Health Sciences and Nursing. He will be responsible for hiring faculty, overseeing the budget, fundraising, setting academic rules and policies, developing academic programs and performing other administrative functions.  He will also coordinate student activities, participate in activities of faculty committees, advise the Provost on academic matters, and provide academic mentoring to faculty.

Dr. Gutierrez brings decades of experience as an educator, researcher and a medical doctor who has run a successful practice in Miami. He has clinical experience in a number of specialties including Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, HIV, Emergency Medicine and Oncology.

Most recently, Dr. Gutierrez was Associate Dean at the Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. While there, he oversaw the 10-year accreditation of the College of Medicine and successfully developed a Master in Physician Assistant Studies Program.

Munroe. “Dr. Gutierrez will lead BMCC’s Health Sciences and Nursing departments as they continue to meet the growing demand for well-trained medical professionals here in New York City and beyond.”

Before FIU, Dr. Gutierrez served as Dean of Miami Dade Medical College’s School of Health Sciences, overseeing 18 Allied Health programs including Massage therapy, Nursing, Physician Assistant, EMS, Pharmacy Tech, Respiratory Tech, Optometry tech, Imaging and Sonogram tech and many others. The Allied Health programs at Miami Dade serve more than 7,000 students.

Over the years, Dr. Gutierrez has been recognized for his academic as well as civic achievements with designations such as the Health Care Heroes award from the Miami Chamber of Commerce, special recognition for dedication to Miami’s homeless population from the Florida Department of Health and the Outstanding Clinical Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Sciences during his tenure at Nova Southeastern University.
