BMCC Welcomes Out in Two Scholars at Ceremony

November 5, 2007

BMCC’s Out in Two Scholarship Award winners were honored in front of joyous family and friends last week as top school officials praised them for their academic work, then handed the students framed certificates sporting their names.

What is the Out in Two?

Out in Two is an academic program designed to help students graduate BMCC within two consecutive years. Students who enter must graduate within four consecutive fall and spring semesters from their date of entry into BMCC.

To be eligible, you must be a freshman enrolled in an AA, AS, or AAS degree program, have completed 12 credits with a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in your first semester and have written a one-page essay entitled “What a College Education Means to Me.”

“This is an honor … a very special award. You are privileged to be here,” Vice President for Academic Affairs Sadie Bragg told the group. Deans Erwin Wong and Marva Craig, and Associate Dean Michael Gillespie joined Bragg in welcoming the scholars with handshakes and hugs.

What Do Recipients Receive?

Qualified students receive $1,400 a semester for their last three consecutive semesters of work. They must take at least 12 credits a semester and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Credits earned in the summers are also counted, and students may be eligible for an additional $550 summer grant under certain provisions.

The scholars are also provided with academic support services, guaranteed early registration, financial aid advisement and are eligible to receive employment on campus as a peer advisor or tutor.

But this scholarship goes beyond just financial and academic support, according to Jordan Michel, a member of the Out in Two Scholars Club.

“The Out in Two Award means you’re entering into a family,” Michel said. “You now belong to a group of individuals that will be your rock to depend on no matter what happens.”
