BMCC RECEIVES LERN INTERNATIONAL AWARDFOR COMMUNITY SERVICE
Borough of Manhattan Community College will receive an International Award for Best
Community Service from LERN, an international association of lifelong learning programming, offering information and resources to providers of lifelong learning programs.
BMCC received the award in recognition of exceptional service in lifelong learning and its service to the community following the attack on the World Trade Center. For three weeks after the attack, BMCC served as an emergency command post for the City of New York, hosting the Port Authority Police Department, the Fire Department, the U.S. Army, emergency medical services units, FEMA, and the Red Cross.
“We are very honored and pleased to receive the award,” said BMCC President Antonio Pérez.
“The awards selection process is very competitive, and it is truly an honor to be selected,” noted Acté Maldonado, BMCC’s dean of adult and continuing education. BMCC was selected from a field of almost 140 nominations from four countries.
According to Nancy Hulverson from LERN member services, the primary criteria judges used for selecting programs of excellence was the quality of being at the leading edge of the field of lifelong learning. In addition, judges also looked for originality, innovation, appropriateness as a model for other programs, replicability, and measurable outcomes.
Presentation of the Award plaques will take place at the LERN Annual Convention in San Francisco at the Awards luncheon, Thursday, November 29th. The award will be delivered to Dean Maldonado.
