Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) has been named one of the nation’s Top 25 Community Colleges for Hispanics by The Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education Magazine.

The annual Top 25 lists chart the national progress of Hispanics in higher education, and shows their significant growth with every passing year. BMCC is ranked as follows:

  • Top 25 Community Colleges Granting the Most AA Degrees to Hispanics:# 13
  • Top 25 Community Colleges Enrolling the Largest Number of Hispanics: # 22

The source of the ranking is the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). These interrelated surveys are conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and they are based on the 2018-2019 academic year, with data from all 50 states.

The year 2020 marked 25 years since Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) were first funded through specific federal legislation. In Fall 2019 at BMCC, 39 percent out of 25,500 students were Hispanic. In fact, nearly 90% of the BMCC student population is comprised of minorities and groups historically underrepresented in collegiate programs.

BMCC’s commitment to Hispanic students and status as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is also reflected in the college’s participation in the Excelencia in Education national initiative.

This effort, supported by BMCC and more than 20 institutions nationwide, has collected data and produced analyses to inform educational policy makers and academic researchers—as well as regional and national elected officials—about how best to serve Latino students in higher education.

Another example of BMCC’s efforts to raise the success of Hispanic students is the $3 million, five-year Conexiónes Title V Project Grant awarded to BMCC in 2020 to increase student engagement and provide students with a deeper connection to their career interests.

“When students arrive at BMCC, they know that we are here to engage them by drawing upon their rich, deep history, cultural experience and strengths that will help each student achieve success inside and outside of the college classroom,” said BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe. “Students who are engaged are more curious, attentive, interested and passionate about what they are learning and they ultimately perform better. BMCC is an institution where we want all students to share that experience and be the best they can be.”
