BMCC PRESIDENT ANTONIO PÉREZ TO RECEIVE NATIONAL AWARD AS 2001 PACESETTER OF THE YEAR

January 29, 2002

Borough of Manhattan Community College President Antonio Perez has been named the nation’s 2001 “Pacesetter of the Year” by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations.
Perez was selected from finalists across the country of chief executive officers at two-year community, junior, or technical colleges and college districts across who have demonstrated special leadership, support, and/or ability in the area of college communications and marketing.

In making their decision, judges pointed to innovative programs that Pérez founded at BMCC such as Prelude to Success, Out in Two, Minority Fellowship Program, Institute for Business Trends Analysis, Virtual Library, Telemedia Accelerator, and BMCC’s Uptown Initiative. They also cited his outstanding marketing, public relations, and fundraising accomplishments, his innovative outreach to potential students, his tendency to think “outside the box,” and his high energy and creativity.

“The Pacesetter of the Year Award is the most prestigious one we present to community college presidents because the judges consider a slate of nominees who have already been deemed the very best in their region,” explained NCMPR President Alan Campbell. NCMPR’s seven regional districts select a Pacesetter from college presidents in their region. The regional Pacesetters automatically become nominees for the national award. Pérez was named Pacesetter of the Year for District I of NCMPR in November.

“Marketing and public relations is extremely important for a community college,” Pérez said. “Considering the enormous wealth of creativity in community colleges nationwide and the fact that a lot of colleges have more resources to devote to marketing, I am truly honored to be named 2001 Pacesetter of the Year.”

Pérez will receive the Pacesetter Award at the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations national conference in Orlando, Florida, in March.
