BMCC PRESIDENT ANTONIO PEREZ APPOINTED
TO WORLD TRADE CENTER MEMORIAL COMMITTEE

November 25, 2002

Antonio Perez, president of Borough of Manhattan Community College, has been appointed to the World Trade Center Memorial Committee by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

The committee on which Dr. Perez sits will draft a mission statement that will be used to guide the development of the memorial at the World Trade Center site. The committee will use as its starting point a preliminary mission statement created by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation Families Advisory Council.

Dr. Perez is one of 11 people appointed by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation to the Mission Statement Drafting Committee. The committee includes individuals representing various points of view, including victimsí families, survivors, first responders, residents and employees of Lower Manhattan, and representatives of cultural and architectural institutions.

“I am very honored to be asked to serve on this committee,” Dr. Perez said. “The events of September 11 directly affected BMCC.”

Borough of Manhattan Community College, located on Chamber Street in Lower Manhattan, lost eight current and former students as well as a building in the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center. For three weeks after the attack, classes were cancelled while the college served as an emergency command center for the cityís rescue and recovery operation.

The Mission Statement Drafting Committee is one of two appointed recently by the Lower Manhattan Development Council. The other is a Program Drafting Committee that will work with LMDC staff to create a draft memorial program that identifies elements to be incorporated into guidelines for a future international memorial design competition.

Both committees are expected to complete their work by early next year, followed by the launch of an international design competition. The draft mission statement and program will be subject to public comment.

Dr. Perez is also a member of the board of directors of the Alliance for Downtown New York and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. He is also a member of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation Arts, Education & Tourism Advisory Council.
