Students from Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY), along with students attending Hudson County Community College, New Jersey City University and St. Peter’s University, will take part in the Goldman Sachs College Collaborative Program from November 2016 through May 2017.

BMCC students have benefited from the Goldman Sachs program in the past, and it has grown to involve other colleges as well. The program consists of 11 sessions, and will raise students’ awareness of career opportunities and deepen their perspective on business challenges. The students will also meet with experienced professionals from Goldman Sachs as they complete a business-related case study project.

The Kick-Off Event was held Friday, November 18 at Hudson County Community College in Jersey City, New Jersey.

BMCC student participants in the program are Diagna Camilo (Modern Languages), Natalia Corletto (Multimedia Programming and Design), Tesfamichael Demeke (Science), Olesia Hyka (Business Administration), Hyun-Shin Lee (Accounting), Karol Malachowicz (Engineering Science), Ching Hei Mok (Business Administration),Henry Noble, (Business Administration), Babatunde Ogunniyi (Computer Science) and Una Radakovic (Criminal Justice).

The students will work with BMCC staff representatives Michael Hutmaker, Dean for Student Affairs; Won Kang, Director of the Center for Career Development, and Thierry Thesatus, Senior Career Advisor. They will also work closely with Goldman Sachs Mentors Karina Suryan, Analyst, Finance; and Ochelle Drysdale, Analyst, Technology.

During the course of the program, each student group will be given a Business Case Challenge related to a particular corporation.

“The students will take on roles such as CEO and CFO, and look at the impact of the challenge from a financial, public relations, operational and human resources or management perspective,” says Kang. “They will consider questions such as, ‘How will results be measured and communicated to shareholders?’ ‘How will you boost employee morale in the face of economic challenges?’”

The benefit to students, he explains, is to give them a sense of the layers of involvement in a corporation, and how people in different roles can impact a company as it strives to meet its mission and achieve its economic goals. The experience also helps prepare students for the workplace.

“We provide career development to students in a number of ways,” he says, “including resume workshops, career path exploration and mock interviews. But this experience gives the students something very valuable that goes beyond that kind of preparation — it helps them begin to see the ethics, hierarchies and layers of responsibility in the workplace.”

The participants will also attend speaker sessions that address career exploration, networking, managing stress and professionalism. In May 2017, they will make Final Presentations at the Goldman Sachs office at 200 West Street in lowerManhattan.

“We are delighted that BMCC students are again participating in this exciting project,” says Hutmaker. “BMCC and Goldman Sachs developed this current format to provide leadership opportunities for our students about six years ago. The addition of the three other colleges will add a new dimension and experience for the students. Goldman Sachs is a friend to the college and has provided opportunities to our students in the past, to take part in activities that enhance their understanding of business and the many layers of responsibility within a corporation. Our students will also have the unique opportunity to interact with and get feedback from executives at Goldman Sachs who will share their expertise and wide knowledge of the many variables that come into play, when a corporation or business addresses a particular challenge.”
