Why BMCC @ Lehman College?
The agreement is the second of the BMCC @ project. BMCC @ Brooklyn College was jumpstarted last year. It was designed to help lessen travel stress on the student population, and help BMCCers grow accustomed to CUNY senior colleges, where they may consider transferring to after completing studies at BMCC.
BMCC @ Brooklyn College was very successful, with many students registering, said Erwin Wong, Dean of Academic Affairs. The framework of that partnership is being carried over to BMCC @ Lehman College.
“The philosophy was that many of our students come from Brooklyn, and they graduate from BMCC, and then attend Brooklyn College,” said Wong.
“Now, in phase II, we are now looking at the students that reside in the Bronx. The same philosophy is that those students who are residing in the Bronx have easy access to Lehman, and the expectation is that when they graduate from BMCC, they will, in fact transfer to Lehman. So a nice transition is being created.”
The Experience will be “Phenomenal”
Wong said Lehman has been very acomodating, and predicted that the experience at Lehman will be “phenomenal” for those who decide to take advantage.
“We’re going to provide students with all of the support services possible. They’ll have tutoring, access to computers, access to the library…Just as they would at BMCC. They’ll have all the services available to them at a senior college,” he added. “The students are going to have an important experience, in terms of attending both BMCC and the senior college at the same time.”
BMCC @ Lehman, just like BMCC @ Brooklyn College, is similar to BMCC’s collaboration in Harlem and Washington Heights with other CUNY schools, which together are providing a more convenient venue for BMCC students.
