BMCC Enhances Instructional and Support Spaces in 70 Murray Street Building

February 20, 2019

Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) has off-site locations in Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx. The 199 Chambers Street campus also offers classes a few blocks away at Fiterman Hall, and at 70 Murray Street.

These locations are constantly upgraded and improved. “The second and third floors of the 70 Murray Street Building have just undergone a comprehensive construction project that yielded 31 smart classrooms,” says Jorge E. Yafar, Assistant Vice President for Campus Planning at Facilities at BMCC.

Other features include new computer labs.“The computer labs are furnished with NOVA trolley system desks, which provide the instructor with the option of lowering or raising all desk-mounted computer monitors, allowing for additional flexibility to quickly convert computer labs into recitation use if necessary,” says Scott Anderson, Vice President for Administration and Planning.

Other renovations at 70 Murray Street include a modern, open staircase connecting both levels and allowing students ease of access to both levels, without using the elevators. The third level has also been provided with medium-sized conference rooms, a student lounge, printing/copying facilities and one gender-neutral restroom.

“The Murray Street Building also houses a newly constructed Respite Room, which provides a nurturing space for lactating parents with complete privacy,” says Yafar.

Students who wish to access the Respite Room should contact Student Affairs and employees who wish to access the Respite Room should contact their supervisors or the Office of Compliance and Diversity. Additional lactation rooms are also available in Fiterman Hall and Chambers Street.

According to Anderson, “Additional improvements will be completed by next month, to include a state-of-the-art security desk that will control the newly installed turnstiles, a security feature that 70 Murray has lacked for years.”

These latest improvements, Anderson says, support BMCC’s mission and goals to improve the student experience. All construction work was coordinated and managed by the Office of Campus Planning, in collaboration with CUNY.
