In a significant step toward enhancing educational opportunities, Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) and Bowie State University (BSU), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes guaranteed admission for BMCC graduates. The signing ceremony took place on the campus of BSU in Bowie, Maryland on Tuesday, January 28.
Under this new agreement, BSU—one of the country’s leading Historical Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs—will extend guaranteed admission to eligible BMCC students who graduate with an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree prior to enrolling at the university. This initiative aims to facilitate a seamless transition for students pursuing higher education and to promote academic achievement.
“We are thrilled to partner with Bowie State University,” said Dr. Anthony E. Munroe, President of BMCC. “This agreement reflects our shared commitment to nurturing talent, fostering diversity, and expanding access to higher education. This partnership is particularly significant as we recognize the vital role that Historically Black Colleges and Universities play in advancing educational equity. Bowie State University has a rich legacy of excellence, and we are proud to align ourselves with an institution that shares our dedication to cultivating an inclusive and empowering educational environment.”
Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, President of Bowie State University, stated “The opportunities that await BMCC students will open the door to new possibilities for them and the future they create for themselves. We are a family here at Bowie State University, and we are excited to welcome BMCC students with open arms.”
Transferring to BSU offers numerous benefits for BMCC students including streamlined admission, academic advising, and a range of additional support services tailored to ensure their success at Bowie State University.
The agreement comes at a time when community colleges are increasingly recognized as vital pathways to higher education. With a growing number of students seeking affordable and accessible options, this partnership aims to address the educational needs of a diverse student population and enhance opportunities for upward mobility.
Both institutions are committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds can achieve their academic and career goals. The MOU will not only benefit BMCC graduates but will also enrich the educational environment at Bowie State University by welcoming a diverse group of students who bring unique perspectives and experiences.
