A New IT Leader for BMCC

September 9, 2014

Veteran information technology professional Joseph Spadaro has joined BMCC as Vice President for Technology.

“Over the past several years, BMCC has taken the lead in implementing new models of teaching and research that incorporate the best innovations in instructional technology,” says president Antonio Pérez.

“As we move forward, Joe Spadaro’s expertise and creativity, as well as his deep insights into how technology can enhance both classroom and experiential teaching, will be indispensable.”

Building on BMCC’s IT (Institutional Technology) platform

Spadaro began his career in the early 1990s as both Director of Programs and Services and as Assistant Director for Information Systems and Services at the Metropolitan New York Library Council. Most recently, he served as Chief Information Officer at Haverford College, a position he previously originated at St. Joseph College.

“I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to have a role in one of the nation’s foremost urban community colleges,” Spadaro says.

“I’m looking forward to working with everyone in the BMCC community—faculty, students, alumni, the IT staff, the administration and the president—to continue building on our IT capabilities and advancing the college’s strategic and operational goals.”

Spadaro, who takes up his new responsibilities on September 17, says his first order of business will be to get to know the college and its people—how they do their work, and how they feel technology can be productively integrated into the classroom.

Taking the time to listen

“Having served as a CIO (Chief Information Officer) in higher education for 15 years, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of aligning IT with an institution’s strategic initiatives,” he says.

“But every college is different, of course, and I plan to spend time speaking to people and, more important, listening. It will be important for me to understand the college’s needs, goals and concerns—and where the most promising opportunities lie.”

Spadaro describes his management style as collaborative and consultative.

“I find that the energy and ideas of one area can frequently generate new ideas and opportunities in other areas,” he says. Equally important, he is a firm believer in professional development, mentoring and fostering a growth environment for IT staff.

“At Haverford College, and before that, St. Joseph’s College, Joe’s contributions had a transformational impact,” says Pérez. “We’re delighted to welcome him to BMCC.”
