21 BMCC STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN EXPLORING TRANSFER AND EXPLORING RESEARCH PROGRAMS AT VASSAR COLLEGE THIS SUMMER

May 12, 2003

Twenty-one students from Borough of Manhattan Community College have been selected to participate in the Exploring Transfer and Exploring Research Programs at Vassar College this summer.

The Exploring Transfer program is a five-week-long intensive residential liberal arts summer session at Vassar College for high-achieving community college students. The Exploring Transfer Program was founded in 1985 to encourage community college students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Exploring Research was founded in 2001 for community college students who want to study science.

More students from Borough of Manhattan Community College have been selected for this summer’s Exploring Transfer Program than from any other community college. Of the 35 students selected to participate in the program, 15 are BMCC students. They are Muhammad Bhatti, Maribel Bodre, Maria de Fatima Cardoso, Winston Chow, Jason Clemmey, Rebecca Fernandez, Jeffrey Franck, Nicholas Jerez, Adam Lee, Sarah Maxfield, Antonio Morales, Judy Phillips, Robert Perales, Victor Ray, and Denise Sakil. Three more BMCC students are on the waiting list.

In addition, five BMCC students have been admitted to the 2003 Exploring Research Program this summer at Vassar College. They are Totlin Banton, Joseph Carrion, Shakirat Ladejobi, Jose Reyes, Fathema Ruma, and Andrea Silva. Two more BMCC students are on the waiting list for the Exploring Research Program.

“We had 55 extremely strong BMCC candidates this year,” noted BMCC Professor Y-Chun Tricia Lin, who serves on the Exploring Transfer selection committee and who will teach in the program this summer. “It’s a shame the program isn’t large enough to admit all of them,” she continued.

For many community college students, the Exploring Transfer and Exploring Research Programs prove transformative experiences. Many of the students who participate in Exploring Transfer and Exploring Research become inspired to transfer to selective colleges and then pursue graduate study. Last summer, the valedictorians from both the Exploring Transfer and Exploring Research Programs were BMCC students.
