2020 Annual Research Symposium Provides Virtual Showcase for Aspiring Researchers

May 13, 2020

On May 13, the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) Annual Research Symposium (BARS) showcased the research findings of 51 BMCC students involved in 39 faculty-led research projects.

Research projects at BMCC receive state, federal and other funding, and often involve partnerships including those with Lehman College, the Population Council, CUNY Research Scholars Program.

Displayed on BMCC’s Open Lab platform, the posters present the impressive array of research areas that BMCC students have delved into. These include anti-HIV neutralizing agents, the potential anti-oxidant capacity of plants, concerns related to the growth of automation, and measuring risk in U.S. stock prices.

“BMCC is all about student success, and the research that our students have accomplished as demonstrated by their posters is testament to that goal. They are conducting research in areas that graduate and post-doctoral students would be envious of. Congratulations to our students and our faculty who mentored them!” said BMCC Acting Provost Erwin Wong.

“We are excited to showcase the incredible variety of research that our students and faculty mentors work on through the year,” said BMCC Director of Research Siddharth Ramakrishnan. “The pandemic pushed us into a virtual space, but made us think creatively about how to allow students to express themselves – through images, videos and other modes of presentations. I think in the future, we will continue to have these online meeting spaces, and combine them with other modes of presentations as well. A big shout-out to OpenLab for helping us host BARS 2020. Congrats to all our students.”

A comment section next to the posters will be open through May 20. Visitors can register their respect for the faculty-led research projects. They are also asked to tag the virtual posters on social media using @bmcc_cuny #BARS2020.

Last year’s BARS symposium poster session was held in the college’s gymnasium with more than 300 attendees. The online platform for 2020 BARS enables a limitless number of visitors, and can reach beyond the college as participants share the link with colleagues and friends.

Ongoing research opportunities at BMCC

At BMCC, students benefit from multiple research opportunities housed in departments as varied as the Center for Ethnic studies, Health Education, Modern Languages, Science and Business.

These opportunities often provide stipends for student researchers who work closely with their professors who are principal investigators on state- and federally funded grants provided through the BMCC Foundation Fund for Undergraduate Research, the Louis Stokes Allied Minority Participation (LSAMP), the CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP) and others.

Resources for faculty researchers include the BMCC Office of Research and Scholarly Inquiry, which provides training and support for faculty and student researchers.

Another resource is the BMCC Office of Sponsored Programs, which offers a wide range of resources to faculty and staff as they search for external funding, develop proposals and manage funded projects.
