Math/STEM Student Activities

BMCC provides math students with many opportunities to enhance their studies. The following programs are some of the ways you can make the most of your math experience while at BMCC and explore future possibilities.

Research/Internship Opportunities

At BMCC, there are opportunities for students to work on a mathematical research project with a faculty mentor. The Office of Internships and Experiential Learning has a number of internships opportunities for math majors or students with strong mathematics skills.

Math Team

The BMCC Math Team works on challenging, fun problems and competes against other two-year-colleges in the AMATYC Student Math League.

The BMCC Math Team meets every Wednesday at 2 p.m. Check with the Math Department office for the current meeting location. We work on challenging, fun problems, sometimes we have a pizza party, and we compete against other two-year-colleges in the AMATYC Student Math League. (We won first place in 2011 in the Northeast Region.)

Anyone is welcome to join!

Contact Professor Oleg Muzician at omuzician@bmcc.cuny.edu for more information.

Here is a sample problem to try:

Here is a game: you throw darts at a spinning globe with your eyes closed, until three darts land somewhere on the globe.
You win the game if the darts land in the same hemisphere, and you get to determine where the hemisphere starts. What is the probability you win this game?

Math Lounge

The Math Lounge is an opportunity for math-oriented students and professors to mingle, discuss mathematics, research and career possibilities. Contact Professor Oleg Muzician at omuzician@bmcc.cuny.edu for information about upcoming Math Lounge meetings.

Math Club

The Math Club was established in 2009 by a group of passionate professors and mathematics major students. The goal they set was to foster a love for mathematics and help students thrive in their math classes.

The Math Club holds multiple activities throughout the year to make the education process fun, including (but not limited to):

  • Math Game Competition with rewards
  • Volunteer Workshops
  • Discussions about future job possibilities in math and other STEM fields
  • College transfer advice at meetings
  • Placement for volunteer jobs with certificates for helping students

. . .and many others.

The Math Club meets on Wednesdays from 2-4 p.m.

Contact Professor Ke Xin at kxin@bmcc.cuny.edu for information about upcoming meetings.
