Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of 23 colleges within The City University of New York (CUNY) system. The Shirley Fiterman Art Center is located in the South lobby of the Myles and Shirley Fiterman Hall Building - a building gifted to BMCC in 1993 by the Fiterman family and rebuilt with an expanded focus in 2012. The Art Center, in partnership with the BMCC Foundation Board, a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to raising funds for student scholarships, and ensuring the success of its students, who come from every borough of New York, and countries around the world, seeking better lives.

The Curatorial Assistant reports to the Director. The Art Center supports the educational mission of the college and serves as a cultural resource for the College community and for the public at large.

Including the CUNY Title Overview, responsibilities are:

Assist with all aspects of exhibitions organization, which includes; conducts exhibition research; coordinate with shippers, artists, installers, gallery partners, and staff and outside vendors. Create checklists, obtain, and edit images of all artwork.

Coordinate and manage all administration; manage and update database contacts; maintain gallery calendar; organize storage space; answer phone calls and disseminate messages; sort mail, organize files; order supplies and open and close gallery.

Work with director to submit paperwork and invoices to Business Office for payment and coordinate and book vendors when needed for events.

Train and oversee interns and monitor workflow.

Assist Director with the production of press releases, development and outreach which includes; create and send event invites/eblasts/program info newsletters.

Oversee social media, maintain, and update website.


Coordinates day-to-day operations of a museum, gallery, or art facility.

Assists exhibit designers, artists, and curators in the preparing and installing works for viewing; serves as liaison to tradespeople and others involved in exhibit construction

Administers gallery activities, such as maintaining information on equipment, materials, and other inventory; updating web pages, organizing gallery events, organizing promotional efforts such as mailings, and preparing catalogs

May supervise daily gallery operations

Performs related duties as assigned.


Bachelor's degree required.

Qualified candidates should be highly personable, proactive, adept at multitasking, have strong written and oral communication skills.

Meticulous and detail-oriented approach to all tasks

Excellent technical and interpersonal skills

Background in art history or arts administration and previous experience at a museum, gallery or non-profit preferred.


Salary commensurate with education and experience.
