James Michel obtained a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MS in Education from Concordia University of Wisconsin, and an MA in Humanities and Social Thought from New York University. His thesis at NYU combined historical and ethnographic methodologies to analyze progressive religions since the late 19th century through the lens of the New York Society for Ethical Culture, a progressive non-theistic institution on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
He began teaching college-level reading and writing in 2007 in Tallinn, Estonia. After moving to New York, in 2011 he accepted a position as a remedial reading adjunct at BMCC, and in 2013 became an instructor in the intensive remedial program, CUNY Start.
