Professor and sculptor Sarah Haviland has exhibited her abstract/figurative sculptures and installations in galleries, parks, museums, and public institutions locally, nationally, and internationally, including permanent works at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey; Pratt Sculpture Park in Brooklyn, New York; and the NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan. She has a sculpture on view in the collection of Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY.

Professor Haviland was awarded a US Fulbright Fellowship for creative research and teaching in Taiwan, September 2018-January 2019. In 2015 she was one of nine artists chosen from 56 countries to be part of the 2015 International Environment Art Project in Taiwan, for which she created an outdoor environmental artwork exhibited on the grounds of the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology in Keelung.

In addition to teaching sculpture and other classes at BMCC, Professor Haviland inaugurated the BMCC Sculpture Club and works closely with students on independent sculpture projects. She guides aspiring student artists toward opportunities such as scholarship workshops at the Modern Art Foundry in Astoria, Queens, and helps them explore art-making with new resources such as the MakerBot 3D printer housed in the Music and Art Department in Fiterman Hall. Professor Haviland also chairs the Fiterman Gallery Faculty Committee that organizes student and faculty exhibitions at BMCC.

Professor Haviland’s awards include a Creativity Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, fellowships from the New York and New Jersey State Arts Councils, and residencies at Sculpture Space, Skowhegan, and Yaddo. Her work reveals her interests in images of women, human and natural gesture, the implications of mirrors, human-bird mythology around the world, as well as the fields of environmental and public art.

Courses Taught

3 CRS.3 HRS.NULL LAB HRS. ART 183 ART 183 (Sculpture Studio I): This is an introductory studio course exploring three-dimensional sculptural form, using both traditional and contemporary materials and methods. Clay and other media are used in hands-on practice as a means of expression and for understanding the language of sculpture, including focus on the creative process from idea to completion. This course is intended to satisfy basic sculpture requirements for transfer within CUNY, as well as professional art programs.
3 CRS.3 HRS.NULL LAB HRS. ART 243 ART 243 (3D Design: Methods & Materials): This course is a hands-on studio course exploring three-dimensional design problems, geared to the advanced student who wishes to expand his/her knowledge of frmal issues of mass, volume, and shape in a variety of materials. Emphasis is placed on the creative process and problem-solving, moving from idea to revision to completed design. This course is intended to satisfy 3D design requirements for transfer within CUNY, as well as professional art programs. Prerequisite: ART 101, ART 107 or ART 183
3 CRS.3 HRS.NULL LAB HRS. ART 283 ART 283 (Sculpture Studio II): This intermediate sculpture course is an extension of ART 183. Directed toward individual study, students continue to explore their interest in sculpture, including modeling, carving, and assemblage in clay, plaster, and mixed media. In addition, students learn the casting process, and practice visual and verbal analysis through writing and critiques. This course is intended to satisfy intermediate sculpture requirements for transfer within CUNY as well as to professional art programs. Prerequisite: ART 181, ART 183 or departmental approval
3 CRS.3 HRS.NULL LAB HRS. ART 383 ART 383 (Sculpture Studio III): This advanced sculpture course is an extension of ART 283. Through in-depth projects, students refine their skills in sculpture, with a focus on larger scale and installations using contemporary materials and techniques. In addition, students learn the use of specialized tools, and practice visual and verbal analysis through writing and critiques. This course is intended to satisfy advanced sculpture requirements for transfer within CUNY as well as to professional art programs. Prerequisite: ART 281, ART 283, or departmental approval
