Hector Canonge

“Interdisciplinary artist and writer, Hector Canonge, has been organizing and presenting independently performance art festivals, cultural initiatives, art projects, and exhibition programs in the United States, Latin America, and Europe since 2012. Canonge, a Latino creative of Catalan and Bolivian descent was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, spent his childhood in Bolivia, and grew up in New York City where he studied Comparative Literature and Media Arts. His literary research interests focus on migratory experiences and gender narratives. His media projects, videos, and performances incorporate text narratives written as an exploration of language and meaning. His first book of poetry, “Veinte Jornadas Para Llegar A Vos” (Twenty Journeys To Get To You) was published by Complot Press while he lived in Bolivia in 2021. The twenty poems that make the book were written in New York City as he waited to travel to South America just before the social and political upheavals that swept the Southern Hemisphere in 2019.

Hector Canonge’s creative work incorporates various forms of artistic expression: Performance Art, Experimental Dance, Butoh practice, and Socially Engaged Art to explore and treat issues related to constructions of identity, gender roles, and migration politics. Challenging the white box settings of a gallery or a museum, or intervening directly in public spaces, his performances mediate movement, endurance, and ritualistic processes. Some of his actions and carefully choreographed performances involve collaborating with other artists and interacting with audiences. His dance and performance art projects have been featured at Triskelion Arts, Green Space, Boston Center for the Arts, Movement Research at the Judson Church, La Guardia Performing Arts Center, Queens Museum, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, and La Mama among others. His performances, dance projects, and media installations have been presented and exhibited widely in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. ”
