Professor Cynthia Karasek teaches Animation and Motion Graphics in the BMCC Media Arts and Technology Department. Professor Karasek embraced the new technology of computer graphics in 1983, when she began designing images on an Apple IIe. Since then, she has designed graphics for many television, video and multimedia projects.
Karasek has helped BMCC students be aware of emerging careers in the field of media, by arranging for her classes to visit major networks and talk with industry professionals in department-sponsored events. As a professor in BMCC’s new Animation and Motion Graphics program, she is committed to engaging students with the possibilities of that field, which range from developing websites to creating professional video to designing digital graphics.
A co-founder of PS 122, an alternative arts program in the East Village of Manhattan, Karasek’s own artwork, combines computer-generated imagery, video and sculpture. She is represented by A.I.R. Gallery and has been exhibited in one-person and group exhibitions in galleries, museums and permanent collections, as well as in local, national and international sculpture festivals in Europe, Canada, New York and other cities throughout the United States.
Karasek share her artmaking process with students, and is known for her large outdoor sculptures made from wood, copper, parts of trees, gold leaf, slate and mixed media. She also produces drawings on slate, velvet and paper, including wall hangings made of aluminum screen, paint and heavy upholstery velvet that are up to 10 feet in height.
