SUMMARY:Open Pedagogy Showcase

SUMMARY:Open Classrooms\, Open Minds: Improving Teaching and Learning Through Description and Non-Evaluative Feedback
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator\nJudith Yancey (Academic Literacy and Linguistics) \nDescription\nAwareness of what is really happening in one’s classroom can become the foundation for reflection\, experimentation\, and improved teaching and learning. We can increase our awareness through our own observations and evidence-gathering\, and through peer observation. However\, the observations we make about our own teaching practices and about our students pass through the filter of our habits\, assumptions\, and biases. Descriptive\, non-evaluative feedback is a tool that empowers and informs. This interactive session will discuss what it means to describe rather than to judge\, and the importance of non-evaluative feedback in reflective teaching. We will share tools and strategies that the individual teacher can apply to their own practice. \nPart of Open Teaching Week. \n  \nContact\nRSVP to cetls@bmcc.cuny.edu. \nVisit the CETLS web site for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Asian Heritage Month Book Discussion: Crazy Rich Asians
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for Asian Heritage Month’s roundtable book discussion on Wednesday\, April 3\, from 3 – 4 p.m. in classroom N-469\, 199 Chambers St.. \nThe book for discussion is Crazy Rich Asians\, which was adapted into a film that has received wide acclaim for facilitating “diversity” and “representation.” While these two concepts will be themes guiding the roundtable\, please feel free to come with your own thoughts and possible topics related to the book (and/or the film).” \nAbout the Book\nWhen New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend\, Nicholas Young\, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One\, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two\, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three\, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor. \nOn Nick’s arm\, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane\, and soon\, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money\, new money\, nosy relatives\, and scheming social climbers. \nFor more information about the book discussion\, contact Professor Jennifer B. Delfino at JDelfino@bmcc.cuny.edu. \n  \nSee a complete list of Asian Heritage month events. \n
