Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about the Counseling Center's Lets Talk program.
Let's Talk is a program for currently enrolled students that provides easy access to informal and confidential consultations with counselors from the Counseling Center. The purpose of Let’s Talk is to provide a pre-counseling opportunity for students to try out talking to a counselor.
Let's Talk is different from counseling. It is an "informal consultation" and is not a "clinical" service. Let’s Talk is NOT psychotherapy. Instead, it’s a drop-in service where a student might informally get a counselor’s feedback on some concerning issue.
Let’s Talk can help in a number of situations, such as curiosity about counseling, concern about a loved one, adjustment to college, culture shock, academic stress, relationship problem, etc. It is often a good fit for those who:
- Aren’t sure about counseling or wonder what it’s like to talk to a counselor;
- Aren’t interested in regular counseling but would like a counselor’s point of view on something;
- Have a specific problem and would like someone with whom to talk it through; or
- Have a worry about a friend or family member and would like ideas about what to do.
The counselor will listen closely to your concerns and might ask you some brief questions to understand your goal for coming. Based on the problem(s) and goal(s) you mention, the counselor may provide support, suggest resources you might find helpful, or help you explore your options.
Absolutely. The counselor will talk through your issue with you and help you determine the best way to get help. The “Let’s Talk” counselor can also help you set up a counseling appointment at the Counseling Center, if you both agree that this is the best option.
Let’s Talk is designed for students who want to talk to a counselor casually. It is NOT appropriate for students needing urgent help. If you believe you have a mental health emergency, please go to the Counseling Center in S-343 (212-220-8140) during business hours, or contact Public Safety (212-220-8080). If you are off-campus, you can contact NYC Well (1-888-692-9355) for 24-hour crisis support.
There is no paperwork or appointments. Students are encouraged to drop-by (walk-in) and talk about whatever is important to them. Students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Meetings have no time limit, but tend to generally last about 15 minutes.
You will meet with a counselor in a private area and the conversation is confidential. Your information will not be shared with anyone else, except when your counselor believes you or someone else might be in immediate danger. If you prefer, you do not have to give your name.
Let’s Talk is NOT a replacement for your counseling appointment. If your next appointment is not soon enough, it’s best to contact the Counseling Center or go there as a walk-in.
For some students, just one visit is helpful. Others may come from time to time to consult with a counselor.
Because of the rules of law and of the counseling profession, no information about you will be shared with anyone else unless you give us written permission (except when your counselor believes you or someone else might be in immediate danger). Counseling records are entirely separate from your academic record.
The counselors at BMCC are licensed psychologists, mental health counselors, or social workers. They have training in the treatment of anxiety and depression. They can also help with stress reduction, academic success, and time management. The counselors are non-judgmental, supportive, and trained to help students build skills and coping strategies that will improve their lives. We offer sessions in Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese.
