Learning Across America Policies

Credit policy

Most of our classes are 40 hours / 4.0 CEU for successful completion of a course. However, sometimes 32 hour/ 3.2 CEU classes are available. Be sure to check your individual course for credit hours.

In order to obtain credit, participants must attend all classes and the tour, and complete all assignments, including an independent research project. If a student misses a class, does not complete the coursework, or misses the tour, that student will not earn any credit. Therefore, you must be certain before you register that you can attend all the classes and go on the tour.

Attendance policy

Attending all classes is required to receive full credit for the course. Students are expected to arrive on time, return from the break on time, and stay until the end of the class. There are no excused absences.

MISSED CLASSES DUE TO SERIOUS ILLNESS: Students who are seriously ill must contact Learning Across America at learningacrossamerica@bmcc.cuny.edu BEFORE missing class with a copy to your teacher. In order to receive any credit hours for the course a student who is ill must submit: (1) a note signed by a doctor and (2) a letter from the student’s host family regarding the illness. Any hours missed due to illness will require demanding make-up assignments. Failure to submit a doctor’s note, note from the family and make-up assignments will result in NO credit hours for the course.

Refund policy

For our Learning Across America courses:
If you have to drop the class and would like a refund, you must email us requesting the refund before we can process it. Our refund policy is simple and straightforward:

  • 100% refund before the first day of class
  • 50% before the second class
  • 0% after the second class

Refunds are made to the credit card or by check only to the payer of record. There are no cash refunds. Email learningacrossamerica@bmcc.cuny.edu if you need to withdraw from class, or transfer to a different section.

For our new summer program, Learning on Location, in which students stay in the dormitories on campus while studying, the refund policy is necessarily different. For a full refund, students must cancel 31 days before the first class date by emailing BMCC at learningacrossamerica@bmcc.cuny.edu.

When you have successfully completed the course, you will receive your certificate by email on the last day of your tour.

We will also fill out, if you email it to us before the end of your classes:

  • paperwork for your au pair agency
  • Kindergeld forms

These will be returned to you at the end of the course.

If you are travelling to Canada, to Montreal or Niagara Falls, you may need a visa (check at the Canadian Consulate website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp ) It may take THREE MONTHS OR MORE for the Canadian authorities to process your application.

Students traveling to Niagara Falls who need a visa should plan to stay on the United States side of the border in case their visa does not come in time. Credit hours are not affected by staying on the U.S. side of the border. (Students from Chicago do not have the option of staying on the United States’ side of the Canadian border.)

Students travelling to Montreal do not have the option of staying on the U.S. side of the border. If you do not receive your visa in time for the Montreal tour, you will not be entitled to any refund either from BMCC or Cultural Hi-Ways, so make sure you have enough time to apply and receive your visa before the tour.
