The BMCC Counseling Center is pleased to announce that we will be hosting an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshop provided by the New York State Office of Mental Health and the Suicide Prevention Center of New York.
This 2 day workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 18, and Tuesday, December 19, 2017. Please make sure you are able to attend both days for the entire time.
ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated workshop in suicide first-aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may be having thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety.
Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants do not need any formal training to attend the workshop—any adult can learn to use the ASIST model. Research demonstrates that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings in those at risk, and is a cost-effective way to help address the serious issue of suicide.
