Women's Herstory Month: Beyond Betty and Veronica: Drawing (on) Women's Experiences in the Modern Age of Comics and the Graphic Novel

Panelists David Bahr, Christa Baiada, Tracy Bealer, Geoff Klock will explore the contemporary upsurge in comics and graphic novels that take complex and varied women's experiences as their central focus and talk back, through narrative and illustration, to the relegation of female characters as secondary and depictions as victimized or hypersexualized with which comics tend to be associated including feminist interventions in the recent Wonder Woman reboot, illustrating girlhood in Raina Telgemier's YA graphic novels, non-compliance and the explicit feminism of Bitch Planet, and drawn photograph as mediated memory in Alison Bechdel's Fun Home.
