Ways to Give

Thank you for your support! Your generous donations go a long way in funding scholarships, research and programs that allows us to continue delivering quality education to our students.

Direct Gifts

Whether though cash, checks, credit cards or DAFs (Donor Advised Funds), these outright gifts help fund the College to meet its greatest needs.

Donor Advised Funds (DAFS) is a giving vehicle that allows donors to make a charitable contribution and receive an immediate tax deduction and then recommend grants from the fund over time.

To make a gift through your donor advised funds, please first speak with your financial advisor and fund administrator to generate your gift and to understand any end of year deadlines they may have.

In December 2015, Congress passed H.R. 2029: Protecting Americans from Tax Hike (PATH) Act of 2015, which made permanent what is usually known as the IRA Rollover.  A qualified charitable distribution from an IRA is a good way for IRA owners age 70 ½ and over to support our work.  To get started, simply:

  • Instruct your IRA custodian to make a distribution directly to the BMCC Foundation, Inc.
  • Although there is no tax deduction, the distribution is excluded from your income for federal tax purposes—no tax is due!
  • Up to $100,000 of your gift (annual aggregate limit) qualifies for this favorable tax treatment.
  • Your gift makes an immediate impact.
  • A qualified charitable distribution from an IRA counts toward a donor’s RMD if one is due. Federal legislation passed in 2019 and 2020 had an impact on required minimum distribution (RMD) rules for IRAs, and RMDs are waived for most donors in 2020. Nonetheless, the option to make a tax-free distribution from your IRA to us remains available if you are 70½ or over. Contributions to your IRA can impact the amount eligible for a tax-free transfer.

Planned Giving

As a donor, you can make a substantial, cost-effective gift to the BMCC Foundation on behalf of the College.  Your life insurance proceeds can be paid to the BMCC Foundation without delay, is private and the outright gift of the policy creates an income tax deduction up to 50% of the donor’s adjusted gross income. To learn how you can make a gift of real estate, please call the Office of Institutional Advancement at (212) 220-8020 or email advancementevents@bmcc.cuny.edu .

As a donor, in writing a will or living trust, you can specify how you would like your estate to benefit BMCC.  Donors who wish to have their gifts managed by the BMCC Foundation must specifically state in their wills or living trusts that their gifts will be made to the Foundation. To learn more about bequests and how you can include BMCC in your estate plans, please call the Office of Advancement at (212) 220-8020 or email or advancementevents@bmcc.cuny.edu.

Life Income gifts serve a dual purpose: the provide philanthropic support for BMCC through the BMCC Foundation on behalf of the College, while also providing both a charitable income tax deduction and an income stream to you and/or your loved ones.

Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) – allows donors to make significant gifts with a modest amount of cash (gifts of $10,000+) or property to the BMCC Foundation on behalf of the College,  while providing a fixed income for life, plus potential tax savings through an itemized deduction.

Deferred Charitable Gift Annuity – allows donors to make significant gifts ($10,000+) to the BMCC Foundation on behalf of the College, while providing a fixed income for life.  However, the donor determines the start date of payments, which must be deferred for at least one year after the gift is made.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) – allows donors to provide an income to a named beneficiary and selecting your rate of return, while making the remainder gift to the BMCC Foundation on behalf of the College.

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT) – allows donors to make a significant gift (gifts up to $100,000+), while like a gift annuity, provide a tax-exempt fixed income to the donor.
