Study Abroad Dominican Republic

Latin American & Caribbean Society

LAT 475 – 3 credits, 3 hours

Location: Yspaniola in Esperanza, Dominican Republic

Selected BMCC study abroad programs travel in the summer.

Taught in English, this study abroad trip will serve to familiarize students with a variety of issues that make up contemporary Dominican social-political life.  The excursions center around the following issues: the Dominican Republic’s historical relationship with Haiti; tourism, immigration policies, and everyday living of Dominicans with special focus on Dominicans of Haitian ancestry.  The goal is to give students a broad description of Dominican history and culture through an organization dedicated to ensuring underprivileged children obtain a quality education.  Students will learn of the cultural and economic differences of a rural and urban area of a developing country such as the Dominican Republic.

Students will meet people both in Esperanza and later in the capital Santo Domingo that will not only lecture on Dominican history but also meet with various activists (that will also lecture) on the Dominican-Haitian migratory and afro-Dominican culture. Students will also visit colonial/historical sites and learn about the founding of the first colonial settlement of the Americas.

Program Fee: TBD (includes international airfare, health insurance, and program-related transportation in the Dominican Republic, excursions, housing and three meals per day) BMCC 60% SCHOLARSHIP is included in price.  Additional scholarship funds may be available for this program.

Additional Costs: BMCC tuition and fees for 3 credits, as well as out-of-pocket costs for personal expenses, visa, tips, and out-of-pocket meals.  Optional side trips to local tourist attractions may also incur additional costs.
