Thinking with the Greeks: Politics, Autonomy, Society

POL 476 – 3 credits, 3 hours

Location: Kasos, Greece

Tentative Dates: May 31 – June 30, 2022

Course Description: Taught in English, this course explores ancient Greek thinkers and the experiences of the ancient polis in regards to their influence, validity and contemporary relevance. Readings will include Plato and Aristotle, among others. The class will be hosted by the Municipality of Kasos and taught in partnership with the School of Political Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Kasos is a small island in Greece with only 800 residents and very few tourists. The final few days of the program will be spent in Athens where visits to the Acropolis, Agora, and the Acropolis Museum will take place and students will examine the links between the ways of living and the ways of thinking.

Prerequisite: ENG 088, ESL 062, ACR 094, or completion of a higher-level course

Housing and Meals: Students will reside in single rooms in a hotel and be provided with three meals per day.

Program Fee: TBD (BMCC study abroad program fees usually range between $1,000 and $2,000, including the BMCC Association Scholarship; the fee covers international airfare, housing, meals, local program-related transportation, excursions, health insurance and any emergency costs related to COVID-19). Students may apply to other scholarships to help cover the program fee. Learn more about scholarships.

Additional Costs: BMCC tuition and fees for 3 credits, as well as out-of-pocket costs for personal expenses, visa (if needed), tips, and out-of-pocket meals.  Optional side trips to local tourist attractions may also incur additional costs.
