Lower East Side Literacy Zone

The Lower East Side Literacy Zone is a unique and dynamic partnership between Borough of Manhattan Community College, the Educational Alliance and PS 188 The Island School. The Literacy Zone provides quality adult literacy and responsive social and educational services to low-income families living on the Lower East Side and in Chinatown.

Funded by the New York State Education Department, the program currently serves 150 adults and families living in Community School District 3 through a continuum of literacy services from early childhood through the GED to post-secondary education and employment.

Specific offerings include ESOL classes, GED preparation, Adult Basic Education, academic counseling, family literacy, social services referrals and case management. The project’s welcome center hubs assess the needs, goals and barriers to education for participants and support families along a pathway out of poverty.
