STEP Eligibilty Requirements
To join STEP you must:
- Be a NYC high school student,and
- Be a NY state resident (have lived in NY state for 1+ years), and
- Submit economic eligibility document.
Economic Eligibility Documentation
All applying students must submit a copy of the appropriate documentation to verify economic eligibility. Appropriate documentation includes one (1) of the following:
- Proof of free or reduced lunch, or
- Proof of public assistance, or
- family tax return showing adjusted gross income. Please see income qualifications below.
Please send pages 1 and 2, which show the household size and adjusted gross income
All required documents should be labeled with the student’s name and delivered by:
- scanning and emailing to bmccstep@gmail.com, or
- mailed or hand delivered to the STEP office (BMCC, 199 Chambers Street, Room S-636)
Income Qualifications Table
If a student does not receive free or reduced, they may qualify to join STEP if they fit into the income qualifications as indicated in the table below.

* Add $7,696 for each family member in excess of 7.
Reference to the family income scale need not be made if the student falls into one of the following categories, and documentation is available:
- The student’s family is the recipient of: (1) Family Assistance Program Aid; or (2) Safety Net Assistance through the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, or a county department of social services; or (3) family day care payments through New York State Office of Children and Family Services Assistance, or
- The student is living with foster parents who do not provide support for college, and no monies are provided from the natural parents, or
- The student is a ward of the State or a county.
Eligibility based on the previous criteria must be evaluated and documented by the STEP coordinator.
